Fun Facts Shane: With 14 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifications to his credit, a gold buckle and numerous rodeo championships, Shane Hanchey is giving all of the tie-down ropers a run for their money and in many cases taking it. He doesn’t have a secret weapon, but he does have great horses in his arsenal. He joined the PRCA when he turned 18. Two years after that win, he qualified for his first NFR. Smokin Reata that fans all knew as Reata was largely responsible for his success at that time. Reata also contributed to his first gold buckle in 2013. In 2017, Simon Cow, a sorrel gelding earned Shane his first tie-down roping horse of the year award. This year he has another horse receiving that honor, Stylish Bugsy, “Bugsy.” All but $3,500 of Shane’s 2023 earnings have come with Bugsy’s help. The horse was also ridden by Caleb Smidt, Hunter Herrin and Beau Cooper. Shane has an older brother that has trained many of his horses, Jason Hanchey. Watching him succeed and seeing how much he loved it has seen Shane delving into training and the horse show world this year. He recently rode two horses to the finals at the AQHA World Show. Now he and Bugsy are getting ready for a trip to Las Vegas where Shane’s wife, breakaway roper and barrel racer Taylor Hanchey, will be leading his fan club. It has been exactly 10 years since he won his first one. He was the overall champion at the 2020 NFR and has finished as the reserve champion twice. With a world champion horse to ride the odds are in his favor.
